Introduction:
The Baumannator TCS is a revolutionary device which allows an electronically controlled transmission to be fitted to any vehicle, while providing infinite adjustability of all transmission functions via Microsoft Windows®. The features and specifications of the Baumannator TCS are described in detail within this document. If further questions arise, please feel free to contact Baumann Engineering by telephone at (864) 646-8920 or via Email at Greg@baumannengineering.com.
Product Specifications:
The Baumannator TCS provides the following specifications and features:
Detailed Product Description:
The Baumannator TCS controls shift scheduling, line pressure and torque converter clutch operation, while providing complete tuneability of these functions via Microsoft Windows® based tuning software running on a personal computer. A laptop PC can be used for in-vehicle tuning and troubleshooting of the system, or a desktop PC can be used with the optional AC adapter if a laptop PC is unavailable. Any PC capable of running Windows® 3.1 with a minimum of 2MB RAM, 386SX-16 Processor, 3MB of free disk space and an available serial communications port will be capable of running the Baumannator host software. These system requirements allow even "garage-sale" computers to be used with the Baumannator system.
Shift points can be adjusted graphically as a function of load (throttle position), allowing each shift point (1-2, 2-3 and 3-4) to be tuned independently at each load point between closed and wide-open throttle. Upshift and downshift points are independently tunable for each gear at all load points. Overdrive (fourth gear) can be used at full throttle without any difficulty, while the inherent flexibility of the system allows tuning to avoid the constant 3-4 and 4-3 part-throttle shifting ("overdrive hunt") found with most non-electronic transmissions.
The line pressure curve versus load may also be tuned to alter transmission torque capacity and part-throttle shift firmness. Torque converter clutch operation is also adjustable, allowing the minimum and maximum allowable throttle angles as well as cut-in and hold speeds to be set. The Baumannator torque converter clutch strategy does not allow the AODE or 4R70W converter clutch to slip under steady-state conditions, as with the OEM strategies for these transmissions. This provides significantly better converter clutch durability in high performance and heavy duty applications.
There are also other enhanced features which can be wired into the vehicle at the customer’s discretion. These features are not required, but will add a lot of value to the package. If not desired, certain features, such as the ManuTronic function, can be disabled via the PC-based tuning software.
These enhanced function inputs include an alternate table selection input and our new ManuTronic feature. The alternate table input will (with the application of +12 volts to the input) select a secondary lookup table from the calibration memory in the TCS. This allows two calibrations or personalities to be stored in the controller with every parameter independently adjustable. Using the alternate table input, the calibrations can be switched on the fly at any time, allowing operation with an external switch, nitrous oxide system or other 12 volt stimulus to provide selection of the secondary table.
The ManuTronic function allows manual gear selection via the original equipment speed control (cruise control) switches. This feature allows up and down-shifting through all four gears at any time, using the Accel and Coast buttons located on the steering wheel. Initiation of this mode requires pressing the Coast and Off buttons in sequence, allowing it to coexist with the speed control system while being mutually exclusive of it.
The Baumannator TCS may be used to retrofit an electronic transmission to a vehicle which was not originally equipped with one. In a fuel-injected application, the conversion simply requires a few connections into the engine management system for power, ground and throttle position. Carbureted applications require installation of a throttle position sensor to the carburetor throttle linkage, which should prove easier than adapting a TV cable for a Ford AOD or similar non-electronic transmission. All other sensor connections are integral to the transmission harness. Transmission harnesses can be provided in a turn-key manner, if so desired.
It is possible to use the Baumannator TCS in a vehicle which was originally equipped with one of the intended transmissions. This could be done in conjunction with an engine management system upgrade (such as an F-150 Lightning mass air flow conversion or the use of a tunable after-market engine management system) that no longer supports the transmission. Use of the Baumannator for this purpose allows flexibility in choosing the engine management system, in addition to the increased control, performance and transmission durability afforded by the Baumannator TCS.
There are essentially two methods that can be employed to accomplish such a conversion. Using the wiring diagrams and pin connection tables in the instruction manual in addition to factory wiring diagrams, it is possible to modify the factory wiring harnesses to allow use of the Baumannator TCS with a different engine management system. Baumann Engineering can assist this process by providing additional information or advice when available. Many people, however, prefer a more "turn-key" implementation. In such cases, Baumann Engineering has teamed up with Pro-Flow Technologies/Best Products to provide a complete system to solve both engine and transmission control concerns in these applications.
For 1994-1995 Mustangs, Pro-Flow manufactures a complete plug-in harness which allows the use of a 1993-level EECIV PCM to be fitted to the vehicle in conjunction with a special version of the Baumannator TCS for transmission functions. There are many advantages to using the 1993 PCM in this application, including the ability to use recalibrated MAF meters without detonation problems at full-throttle, no ignition timing retard during shifts, no engine torque reduction strategy, increased availability of after-market products, engine control strategies which are more modification tolerant and better vehicle performance. All of these advantages come in addition to the previously mentioned features and advantages of the Baumannator TCS. The Pro-Flow system can be provided complete with a 1993-level PCM and barometric pressure sensor, as needed. Tuneability of the electric cooling fan is also achieved via an enhancement to the PC-based tuning interface of the Baumannator TCS, allowing low and high speed fan modes to be set for specific engine coolant temperatures.
In addition to the Mustang system, a Lightning mass air conversion kit using the Baumannator will also be available. Other applications will be developed as market demand dictates. If you have a specific application for a turn-key harness that you would like to see available, please contact Baumann Engineering or Pro-Flow Technologies.
